Question 22- Whats with the site?? Give us some kind of update, its been 2 months and it says the same thing!

We continue to work diligently on making this happen.  Unfortunately, we cannot control the timing of the progress being made - nor is there any 'new' news to report.  If there was, if would be on this website.  Would you prefer I just 'made something up' to keep you interested?  I promised honesty from the start - and right now it appears we are in a holding pattern.  Like I've said on many occasions, I am as frustrated as you - and thank you to everyone who continues to hold on to the dream.  Hope to see many of you at the Trick or Treating event this Friday at the Pinellas Park Town Square Plaza (by the England Bros Band Shell, behind Joto's.)

Question 21 - Submitted from e-mail comment form:  Okay, we all got excited about getting to go HOME to Sunshine to race again, any up dates of info. talk of a lease, buying these for the track, is anything going on yet??   Looking to make plans for next season soon, need to know if Sunshine will be a racing option, Thanks.

There is no update to be shared at this time.  I ask that no assumptions be made - or anything to be taken out of context on the following information...

  • I had a teleconference with the future promoter on Thursday, August 29th and was given permission to start planning 'petition signing' events.  Details will be forth-coming next week.  This meeting was not with the state.
  • There is no tentative opening date - we have learned all too well that there is still too much to be done to be discussing dates. When we have something concrete - those registered to receive updates from this website will be the first to know.
  • As I have stated all along - please continue with your current racing plans... do not do anything anticipating the re-opening of the speedway.  The rules, classes, etc... will not be determined until a lease is secured.
  • I will not share 'insider' information with one or two individuals - when something can be made public - it will be done on this website for everyone.
  • Again, it is not the pace, but the progress being made that is important.

Question 20: If we have relatives and friends that don't have computers can we take their information by phone and help them sign the petition from our computer?

  • The e-mail address listed on the petition signing form is used solely for verification that the person did actually sign the petition.  However, there are other identifying features available, such as their telephone number.  Because electronic signatures/petitions are relatively new in the political world, all names must include their first and last names, as well as one verification feature (e-mail address, conventional address, phone number, etc...).  So if you are collecting 'signatures' over the phone, please make sure you input their full name and phone number and/or conventional mailing address into our system.  Also, please type the name of the person *(that would be you!) that collected the signature in the comment section.  Great question - thanks for asking.  Thanks too for everyone's dedication in collecting signatures!

Question 19 - Submitted via comment section:  Please re-address the tentative opening date.

  • There are no tentative dates set... until a lease has been obtained, and the necessary changes/updates have been made to the property, anything you hear concerning an opening date should be treated as speculation only.
  • Please continue to visit the website for honest, accurate, and most current information - which is posted as it becomes available.

Question 18 - Submitted on a comment form:  I was down in Bradenton Monday and was told that you were going to make it longer and more banking in the turns, just checking thanks...

  • There are no current plans to change the length or banking of the track.

Question 17 - Submitted on comment form:  Please address that Sunshine Speedway would never operate as a race track again due to the clauses in the inital contract.

  • All recorded deeds within Pinellas County are public record.  According to a Land Title Specialist that has reviewed the deed - there are no land use restrictions in the deed, which was recorded on June 30, 2004.  Given that information, I have to believe that any future land use restrictions were speculation and rumor until proven otherwise.

Question 16 -Submitted on comment form: I have a question if I may? It's great to see this may happen! My question is how will this affect the dragstrip? Or will it all? Does anyone know?

  • The dragstrip operates under it's own lease with the state.

Questions 15 - Information submitted from polling form:  I have just heard that State Troopers are planning on making the oval track site a satalite station and I have also heard of some plans that would bring Ulmerton Rd. pretty much right down the drag strip from a fairly reliable friend.

  • We are talking about a substantial amount of property - and there are many plans, some short term - and many long term, that utilize the land.  To address your first concern we have also been told about the substation, which is tentatively scheduled for part of the property, but does not directly affect the actual oval, however, it will probably impact the configuration of the pits, general admission entrance, etc...  Second, there are plans on the table to change the overpass on Ulmerton that currently merges the traffic entering eastbound Ulmerton from the left to arch more south and have the merging come from the right side.  Those plans don't extend the road usage much more than the equivalent of the stables area.  Both of these possibilities/probabilities are part of the tedious process we continue to work through.  We must remember that this is state property we are attempting to lease and we are grateful for the opportunity to make any accommodations necessary to make this happen.
  • Thank you for sending me any information you hear... The purpose of this website was to continue to address rumors, concerns, possibilities, probabilities, and most importantly - the truth.  We want everyone to have a one-stop source for honest and accurate information as we know it.  I continue to believe that it isn't the pace, but the progress we are making.  Until we have secured a lease, we continue to wait.
  • As I was so bluntly reminded very early Saturday morning - not everyone is on our bandwagon for reopening the track.  Please continue to collect signatures and send them in to me.  Continue to share the website with friends and family.  And most importantly, believe that good things come to those that wait.

Question 14 - Are there any famous DJ's or Nascar drivers involved in this process?

  • No.

Question 13 - Do you know what classes will be run weekly?  When will rules become available?

  • Right now the focus is on state requirements and obtaining the lease.  It is a bit premature to have class information ready.  As soon as it is, we will post the information on this website - which will stay online until opening day.

Question 12 - Please address the rumor that high-profile Florida short-track racing brothers are involved in the new  speedway.

  • There are no sibling duos involved in the negotiations.  I am well aware that so much secrecy involved with this has prompted many rumors - especially the Nascar driver type - to resurface, but hang in there.  Hopefully more information will be hitting the website soon.

Question 11 - What needs to be replaced to reopen the speedway?

  • Pretty much everything but the oval, which has been repaved!  There will be new bleachers installed, 19 rows high totalling nearly 600 feet in width.  There will be a new scoreboard, as well as a line-up board.  A new scorer's tower will be erected and there are plans for a climate controlled seating area for season/corporate ticket holders.  We will be adding a substantial amount of new restroom facilities, and a new PA system.  In addition, an all new lighting system will be installed. You can see, there is lots of work to do - but we are up for the challenge!

Question 10 - What is left at the speedway site?

  • The bleachers are gone, but the cement walkway between the old catch fence (which is gone) and bleachers is still there.  The buildilngs that housed the concession stand and the beer hut, along with all the old restrooms, have been torn down.  The pits look relatively the same (they still host drags out there twice weekly) and the pit office is still standing.  The bathrooms that were added behind the grandstands in the late 90's are still there -the scoreboard and line-up board are gone. All lighting has been removed, along with the scorer's tower and air-conditioned seating area.  The poles that held the lighting are still there, but are less than 60 feet tall and are no longer adequate for the new lighting that will be installed, which requires 80-100 feet.  The majority of the entrance/ticket booth areas is gone.

Question 9 - When can we see actual drawings of what the track is going to look like?

  • As soon as these are finalized, I will scan them and make them available on this website.  Also, we are working on having a bringbackthetrack.com event where all the information will be on-hand for everyone to see.  Tentatively this is scheduled for late October or November.  I will keep you posted.

Question 8 - So what's going on with the track? Is it really coming back?

  • I understand everyone's frustration.  We are patiently waiting on the next step.  Our most recent challenge was the number of restroom facilities that must be added to the property to host events with attendance anticipated at up to 5,000.  We have secured those pricing quotes, and continue to move forward.  A lot still has to happen.  The process is, as stated before, very tedious. We continue to work diligently - daily - to make this a reality.

Question 7 - Is it a rumor that the unofficial reopening date for the track is May 09, 2009?

  • Rumor, rumor, rumor...Sorry, that is rumor... it's crazy how things get started. Originally, we started out hoping for February - but quickly learned that was too aggressive - bordering insane - and May seemed a little more realistic, but has now proven to be as agressive as January.. There has been no official or tentative date set. The process to secure a lease with the state is extremely detailed and time consuming.  To assume anything right now would be speculation. As soon as we have something concrete - it would be in our best interest to make the announcement so that everyone can prepare, and that is what we plan to do.

There are so many factors playing into an opening day date, most importantly how quick we can accomplish what needs to be done when we can obtain control of the property. Since quotes on most everything have already been secured, it will just be a matter of completing the necessary changes and updates.  Thank you for sharing this information, I will be adding your questions to our FAQ's on the website. It is our goal to keep everyone informed.

If anyone hears a rumor - please e-mail me so l can address it.  That way everyone has the most fair, honest, and accurate information available.

Question 6 -Is there anything the drivers can do to help make this happen?

  • It is amazing to see the kinds of sacrifices the drivers are willing to make to get a track re-opened within the confines of Pinellas County.  This area is truly the 'heart' of southern short track racing.  Fortunately, for those of us who dream of reopening the track - there is a local man with a vision, dedicated and determined, with the resources and perseverance to see this through to the end.  There will be plenty of time for everyone to pitch in - we will keep you posted as the time draws closer!

Question 5 - Will there be any changes made to the track, such as banking?

  • I haven't heard anything about banking, but I know that there are many ideas on the table as to the entrance, pits, and most excitingly - the way the track will be lighted!

Question 4 - What can we do to help?

  • Most important right now is to get the word out.  We have to be able to show the state there is strong community support and a need to have the stock car track up and running again.  Please encourage everyone you know to register for the e-mail list and send comments for posting!  Spread the word about www.bringbackthetrack.com !

Question 3- Is anybody talking about when this might happen?

  • It's a bit premature for actual dates- but fingers are crossed for sometime in 2009!

Question 2 -What makes this different than every other rumor we've heard for the past 3 1/2 years?

  • This isn't a rumor.  No famous people have come to town.  No rich DJ's have courted any Cup drivers this time.  This is real people, spending real money, working with real attorneys, with real architects, with real state officials, to make it a reality.  No promises.  But doing everything within the realm of possibility, working to make it happen.  There's been too much talk - for too long.  It's time to put some long overdue real 'action' back on that oval!

Question 1- Is there any action that can be taken by any of us to help convince the "powers-to-be" that opening that track would be a good thing for all involved?

  • By 'powers-to-be' I am assuming you are referring to the future track owners/promoters.  Rest assure, these folks do not need to be convinced.  The hours and money that have been committed to this project speaks volumes.  Their main objective of remaining silent during this process has been to stay totally focused on the job at hand - anticipating that the phone lines will light up like Christmas with well-wishers and those wanting to be involved.  There will be plenty of time for all of that after the lease terms have been agreed upon.   As far as the state is concerned, this is just business.  But since we are looking to reopen a speedway, opposition from surrounding areas can be expected, and that is why we are collecting names and e-mails from those that want to see this happen. Printed copies of the e-mails have already outgrown the 1/2" binder that was originally holding them all and we will soon be forced to replace the 1" binder or start a second one.   Over 2,000 visitors have already dropped by and the official release of the website isn't until Sunday - at the Sunshine Family Reunion.  In the meantime, continue to share the website with family and racing friends.  Your support has been overwhelming and truly appreciated.
